Mr. Phan Ba Duong was born in Binh Phu, Cai Lay Vietnam in 1946. Father of ten, Mr.
Duong is survived by his wife of over four decades Mrs. Nguyen Thi Dung, as well as eight of his
children—seven of them living in the Philadelphia area. A committed family man, Mr. Duong was
particularly fond of his children, and often seen fawning over of his 13 grandchildren.
Forever a patriot, Mr. Duong’s lifelong journey was an inexorable struggle for freedom.
Raised in the language and cultures of the Mekong Delta, Mr. Duong avidly pursued knowledge in
both Vietnamese and English throughout his life; at a young age was also, too, exposed to
Francophone education in southern Vietnam.
As a young man Mr. Duong served in the army for the Republic of South Vietnam, joining
their ranks in the 1960s alongside the American military. Following this, he was appointed village
chief of My Phuoc Tay, a prominent position he held for many years. At some point after the
Communist invasion in 1975, Mr. Duong was then imprisoned for an undisclosed number of
years.
In 1995, Mr. Duong left the country that he loved. With high hopes for his family and
future generations, and along with his wife and six children under the age of 18, Mr. Duong
traveled to Philadelphia by way of California. Settling in South Philly, his life and family eventually
began to thrive in the local community. Involved in Vietnamese-American politics, as well as the
preservation of cultural heritage, Mr. Duong was always an active civic participant.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Mr. Duong’s passing on the morning of May 27,
2020. Amidst a beautiful spring day, with his loving family gathered by his side, Mr. Duong
reconnected with Buddha and our eternal oneness. His spirit, generosity and love will be missed.
