Professor Emeritus Francis "Frank" Joseph Peters Jr., Ph.D, of Philadelphia, PA passed away peacefully November 29, 2015. Born in Brooklyn, NY August 11, 1943, the eldest son of the late Francis "Frank" Joseph Sr. and Pauline Frances Peters, he resided in Brooklyn and Metuchen, NJ until college, attending St. Mary's High School in Perth Amboy, NJ. Frank was a graduate of Belmont Abbey College, NC, receiving an English degree, before completing an MA in English Literature at Seton Hall University, NJ, and a Ph.D in Linguistics from New York University, NY.
Frank held various teaching posts throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, including Sacred Heart University, CT and Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), NJ, before accepting a position as assistant professor with the English Department at the University of Trondheim, Norway in 1971. He
returned to the US when offered a post with the English Department at Bloomsburg University, PA in 1991. He rose to the position of full professor before retiring in 2011, moving to Philadelphia, PA in 2013 to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Engaging, entertaining and conscientious, Frank was favored by his students, helping guide and mentor many of them long after leaving his charge.
An active community member, Frank served on the Bloomsburg Area School board, and volunteered with various charitable organizations. Ever the athlete, Frank competed in several youth sports, played collegiate soccer for Belmot Abbey College, and later coached varsity soccer at Sacred Heart University, elite-level basketball during his time in Norway, as well as youth wrestling and ice hockey. Frank was an avid patron of the arts, supporting organizations in Norway, Bloomsburg and most recently Philadelphia.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife Robertine "Teena" A. Peters and sister Valerie T. Peters, he is survived by his daughter, Sarah L. Peters and wife Alexandra Tomich of Philadelphia, his three sons, Michael R. S. Peters of New Hope, PA, Nicholas S. Peters and wife Shari Peters of Philadelphia and Francis "Chip" J. Peters, III and partner Laurie Pierce of South Windsor, CT, his grandchildren Alice Peters, Emma Peters, Lucy Peters and Ian Peters, his sister Maria F. and husband James H. Freis, Esq. of Metuchen, and his many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 5 at St. Columba Catholic Church at 12pm, 342 Iron Street, Bloomsburg, PA.
