Hong Y. Cheng, most well-known for his love of travel, karaoke, and robust social life, passed away on May 29, 2022 in Philadelphia, PA at Jefferson University Hospital with his children, children’s spouse and grandchildren by his side. He was 78. Hong, born in 1944 in Cambodia, lost both of his parents in adolescence and was raised with his younger sister by his aunt and uncle. He started his own family in Cambodia with the marriage of him and his wife, Muy Suy Kong, now deceased (2007). Hong immigrated to the United States with his wife and children in 1981.Settling down in the Bronx while he and his family began to work and establish themselves in this country. During this time, Hong held several different jobs, sometimes multiple at the same time, as was the case when he worked at the fish market and as a dishwasher. These roles were just a predecessor to Hong's eventual launch into entrepreneurship. Over the subsequent time period, Hong ran two businesses: a jewelry business and a gift shop. With his drive and self-taught spirit, Hong was able to purchase a house in Brooklyn for all of his children to gather and commune, before retiring at the age of 54. He resided in his home until around the time of his death. Hong has always been known to bring the party with him wherever he goes, especially on his travels, which he enjoyed with family and friends in the latter part of his life. Whether it be to France, China, Singapore, Hawaii, Australia, or wherever else his spirit took him, Hong had a passion for seeing as much of the world as he could with the time he had. Hong is survived by his 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
