John A. Avicolli passed away on Wednesday October 18, 2023. Born on February 22, 1943, he is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 56 years, Gail (nee Hoffman); his devoted son John and wife Meredith (nee LeMasters); Pop-Pop of Jack; his sister Bernadette Grimditch and nephews John (Christa) and Michael Grimditch; his sister-in-law Tina Yee Hoffman and nephew Jospeh Hoffman and niece Rose Hoffman; special cousins Nicholas and Valerie Pinardo, and many other cousins and good friends.
He was the son of John and Eleanor Avicolli. He was a proud graduate from Bishop Neumann High School Class of 1960 and helped the Neumann Pirates win one of their first baseball Catholic League Championships.
John built his 48 year career with Nabisco. Making the trek up I-95 day after day for close to five decades, we would love the stories he would share and could always smell the vanilla wafers when he’d come home. From the mixing department to the bake shop, he worked his way up the management ladder.
Although he was unable to serve our country’s military, he was a proud patriot and more than willing to help our community at large. He was avid sports fan constantly cheering on his Phillies and Eagles. A season ticket holder for both teams, there was no shortage of celebration for him as he was able to see both teams get pivotal wins throughout the course of the years. He was happiest making memories at the Jersey Shore with his family and friends.
In retirement, John continued to serve the community as a bus driver. He would pick up children from the surrounding Philadelphia area and drive them to Waldron Mercy Academy.
Although John’s story ends, his family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff of Jefferson Hospital and Magee Rehabilitation for their care, love, and support for John.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Wednesday October 25th from 6:30 to 8:30PM at Pennsylvania Burial, 1327-29 South Broad Street and funeral mass at 10:30AM on Thursday October 26 at St. Richard’s Church, 18th and Pollock St. Interment at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
