Joseph Aversa Profile Photo
On November 23, 2020, at the age of 80, Joseph Aversa Sr. passed away with his loved ones by his side, after a short but fierce battle with cancer.

Joseph was born in St. Caterina, a small town on the coast of Calabria, Italy. At the age of 14, he came to the United States with only his father and sister. Two years later, through hard work and determination, they saved enough money to bring the rest of their family to the United States.

After graduating high school, Joseph entered the army and spent time in Europe during his deployment. He made many lifelong friends during his service and always looked back on those years with fondness and pride.

Once back home, Joseph began working as a laborer and training as a bricklayer. He quickly advanced in his trade, winning bricklaying competitions and was repeatedly given promotions by his employers. He was the youngest foreman in his field and managed hundreds of men on a daily basis. Joseph always exemplified hard work and led by example. He was respected and loved by those that he worked with. Joseph utilized his work ethic and knowledge and co-founded Cava Building Supply in 1972. His reputation for honesty and integrity quickly grew the business into the premiere supplier of masonry materials in Philadelphia. The business continues to thrive today and his legacy is carried on by his children.

Joseph had a love for the outdoors and nature. He was an avid hunter and traveled all over the United States and Canada in pursuit of this passion. He spent countless hours in his garden growing fruits and vegetables and tending to his fig and lemon trees. Most of all, he enjoyed sharing these passions with the people that he cared about. The bonds and friendships that these hobbies forged over the years were something that he loved and cherished.

As Joseph grew older, he traveled all over the world. He and Maria were able to see and experience places that many people only dream of. And like his other hobbies, he loved sharing these experiences with the people he cared about.

Above all, Joseph was a man that lived for his family. He was a devoted Husband, loving Father, and the most amazing PopPop that this world has seen. His devotion to family, tradition, and honor is unparalleled in this world and Joseph lived a truly meaningful life filled with more love than anyone can hope for. His memory will be carried on by the countless family and friends that he touched during his lifetime.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 48 years Maria (Mazzola). Devoted father to Domenic (Anna), Michele Mano-Cozzubbo (Chris), Joseph Jr. (Michelle), and Jennifer (Michael Plink). Cherished PopPop of Dom Jr., Jimmy Jr., Natalie, Justin, Nicky, Stephanie, Joey, Lindsay, and Garrett. Son of the late Domenico and Rosa (Caporale) Aversa.
