OBITURARY
Leroy F. O’Kedas passed away on March 18th, 2019 after battling a long illness. He was born on February 16, 1941 to Leroy and Esther O’Kedas in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was one of twelve children. Leroy attended and graduated from St. Peter Claver elementary school and Southeast Catholic High school. After graduation he become a solider of the U.S. Army which he served and retired after twenty-three years. During his time of service, he met and married Betty L. Hayes also of Philadelphia and together raised their three children Verleece Smith, Charles Verdell (deceased) and LeRoya Phillips. Leroy also graduated from Pierce Junior College with a degree in Business Management. Being an active member of St. Rita’s of Cascia Catholic Church for many years he served as a lector and eucharistic minister. Later he was accepted into the Permanent Diaconate Program and was later ordained at Permanent Deacon. After his wife’s death in 2001 he started experiencing health issues and moved to Virginia with his daughter and her family to be taken care of in 2005. He joined Ascension Catholic Church where he became a member and served for some time until he fell ill and was unable to attend. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all.
Leroy leaves this two daughters LeRoya (husband Michael) and Verleece, three grandchildren Herbert, Jacob and Lexy. One great-granddaughter Haniya. Five sisters Emily Herder (husband Ronnie), Juanita Perkins-Qui (husband Lee), Leona O’Kedas, Ramona (husband James) and Rita O’Kedas, along with nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
Leroy’s service and burial will be in Philadelphia.
