Mary C. Santoro
January 21, 1939 – April 29, 2026
Mary suddenly passed away on April 29. She has now entered the Gates of Heaven and is with her Lord and Savior.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Frank Santoro and her siblings Nicholas Manerchia and Angela Tilli
She is survived by her children William (Annie), Michael (Terri) and Meta (Joe).
She is also survived by her grandchildren Thomas McAnany (Shannon), Alexandria Caruso (Joseph), Billy Fulginiti (Stasia), Lauren, Gabrielle and Katelyn as well as her great grandchildren, Sutton, Juliana, Arielle, Sophia, Lucas and Alara in addition to many loving nieces, nephews and close friends.
Mary graduated from Alvernia University and J.W. Hallahan Girls High School. A Philadelphia native and lifelong South Philadelphia resident, Mary proudly owned and operated the beloved “Downstairs” bar at 9th and Christian for more than two decades. A true neighborhood staple, it was a place where everyone felt at home—a welcoming gathering spot for regulars, friends, and spirited games of pinochle that became part of its enduring charm.
Mary was a woman of unwavering and deeply rooted faith. She was an active and cherished member of several church communities throughout her life, most recently the First Christian Assembly, where her presence was both meaningful and inspiring. She served with grace, humility, and a genuine commitment to uplifting others, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her daily scriptures were something she proudly shared with her friends and loved ones.
Her legacy will live on in all the lives she touched and the family that she deeply cherished.
All are welcome to pay their respects on Monday, May 4 at the First Christian Assembly located at 1900 South 11th Street. Visitation with family will be held from 10 am to 11 am, followed by a Service led by Pastor Joe and Pastor Jim.
