Nicholas Anthony Coppa, 89, born February 21, 1931, died peacefully in his sleep November 7, 2020 in Philadelphia PA. Nick was the son of Italian immigrants from Forio on the island of Ischia situated in the bay of Naples, Italy. His mother Felicia F. Migliaccio Coppa and father Nicola Coppa came to the American shores through Philadelphia, she, at age eight in 1910 and he, at age 19 in 1911. Nick, born in South Philadelphia, attended James Wilson Elementary School, Barlett Junior High School, and graduated South Philadelphia High School for Boys in 1949. That same year, he with his father opened, Nick Coppa & Son, manufacturers of fine upholstered furniture. From their showroom and workshop they offered custom upholstered furniture and a full line of furniture repair services. With the death of his father (1962), he continued this enterprise until the late 1960s when Nick opened a retail furniture, tables, lamps, and accessories store with an accent on products from Italy. He was self-employed there until he retired in 1993.
Nick was a renaissance man: he loved to sing and was a skilled artist who received many Fleisher Art Memorial School awards for his creative excellence in sculpture. He was a lover of poetry and published In the Deepest Blue, (2016),* a book of seventy two-original poems expressing a broad range of concepts, emotions, situations and moods, love, happiness, life, death, loss and sorrow. He was an exceptional craftsman, pursued numerous intellectual interests, and generously gave from his heart and mind to his friends and family.
He will be remembered for many great things, but for many little-ones, he will be remembered as the model Santa Claus, a title greatly deserved for the hundred of thousands or perhaps millions of smiles and cries of joy he brought to his seventy-plus nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews through the generosity of his expansive loving heart and the many, many, .., many toys and gifts he brought them year after year.
Nicholas Coppa, Jr. was preceded by his brothers Joseph W. Coppa, Anthony P. Coppa, and sister Josephine M. Coppa and is survived by his sister, Angelina M. Falcone and his lifelong friend, Donald Corrado and his godson, Nicholas Corrado.
