Sara Raquel Dias de Sousa Carvalho e Raposo, 47, passed away on Nov. 13, 2025 surrounded by family in her Central Philadelphia home, following a prolonged illness.
Sara was born in Lisbon, Portugal, the daughter of João Eduardo Carvalho and Madalena de Sousa Carvalho.
Sara graduated from the Gil Eanes High School in Lagos, Portugal, then went to the University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences, earning a degree in Chemistry. She later earned a Masters Degree in Education Leadership from the University of London.
Sara married Pedro Raposo on January 9, 2015, in Lagos. They had met ten years before at a summer school about historical scientific instruments hosted by Utrecht University, the Netherlands.
Sara was passionate about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, a field in which she paved a sound career starting as a facilitator at the Pavilion of Knowledge in Lisbon. Sara then helped prepare the conversion of the old Organic Chemistry Laboratory of the Lisbon Polytechnic School into a heritage site integrated with the National Museum of Science and Natural History of the University of Lisbon. In 2017, after several years running her own science tuition business, Sara moved to the United States, joining her husband in Chicago where she took employment as an Education Coordinator at what is now the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. Then she worked for the Frost Museum of Science in Miami. After relocating to Philadelphia, she joined Citizen Diplomacy International (which eventually merged with the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia). More recently, she had been serving as Vice-President of Museum Experience at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown.
Sara was known, esteemed, and admired among her loved ones, friends, and colleagues for her generous personality, inquisitive mind, solid work ethic, good humor, and positive outlook on life. Sara loved travelling, going to the beach, watching tennis and soccer, attending concerts, and spending time with family and friends. She also collected antiques and nurtured a passion for photography.
Remaining to cherish Sara’s memory are husband Pedro, parents João and Madalena, and siblings João Ricardo and Maria João (“Jójó”).
