“Lovin' you is like food to my soul” - Boyz II Men
Soigh Ich Shoir was born on October 21,1949 in Battambang, Cambodia, escaped to America from the Cambodian war and prison labor camps with five young children in 1980, and passed away peacefully on February 27, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was 75 years old.
Despite not being allowed to get an education in Cambodia, Soigh managed to learn to read and write enough Khmer and know enough math to start a small business and raise 5 children in the rough neighborhoods of South Philly and the Bronx, New York. Her hard work and sacrifice inspired three of her children to attend and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania. Two became dentists. One completed his graduate studies at Columbia University.
Soigh was a wonderful grandmother who enjoyed playing and laughing with her grandkids and great grandkids when they visited.
Despite losing her father, brother, sister-in law, brother-in-law and nephew during the Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime, Soigh was kind-hearted, loving, compassionate and smiled gently at everyone she met.
Soigh was very talented and had many skills. She was a great cook, always able to copy dishes she tasted in restaurants. She was a great seamstress and an excellent gardener, making almost anything grow in her backyard including corn and persimmon. She also loved pickling, especially crunchy mustard greens. Though she did not speak English well, she enjoyed shows such as Stomp, Miss Saigon and Cirque du Soleil.
Soigh is the fourth of eight children. Both of her parents passed along with 3 other siblings. Her remaining siblings can be found in Arizona, Washington and Germany. She is survived by P. Wong and their five children, Heing, Heng, Soun, Eng and Jake, fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
We will miss you. Loving you was like food for our souls.
